Space Flight

A Testimony of Grace in a Sudden Fall

The Fall

June 13th was a beautiful Sabbath morning. The entire congregation was excited to celebrate Father’s Day. Everyone and everything needed for the service was present and accounted for—except the visiting pastor.

I had just offered the intercessory prayer, and the stage was set for a spirit-filled day. The welcome was in session when I decided to slip out to refill my water bottle and then sit beside my husband in one of the pews.

As I reached the top of the stairs, I saw the visiting pastor arrive. I invited him to follow me so I could guide him via the back way to the rostrum. As we began descending the stairs, the Spirit of God told me to pull up my dress so it would not catch on the heel of my shoe. Before I could follow through, my dress caught my heel. I went flying through the air from about the third or fourth stair from the top, landing heavily on the right side of my face.

While flying through the air, my mind worked overtime. I saw myself living as a "vegetable" for the rest of my life, and I asked God to take me, if my husband was going to have to care for a cripple for the remainder of our days. Upon connecting seamlessly with the hard floor, I felt the teeth on the right side of my face shift to the left.

As my body hit the ground, I writhed in anguish. The Spirit of God told me to get up, so I did. I immediately cradled my head in both hands and cried, “God help me, God help me, God help me.”

The pain immediately dissipated from my body. Isaiah 65:24 reminds us, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” Truly, “God is my Refuge and Strength, my ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

The Diagnosis

After waiting at Urgent Care for approximately an hour, we were sent to the hospital’s Emergency Room on a “fast track.” We were checked in quickly upon arrival, but that was as fast as it got. Everything crawled from there. After several hours, I was finally called back and placed on a bed in the hallway. Then, the pace picked up again.

I was given a CT scan and evaluated by both an ophthalmologist and a plastic surgeon. The laceration above my eye required three stitches, while the other cuts on my face—caused by the impact of my glasses—were left to heal naturally. The results of the CT scan showed that all the bones on the right side of my face were shattered, and the bone supporting my eye socket was obliterated. Plastic surgery was a strong possibility. The ophthalmologist evaluated my vision, which was completely blurry with double vision on the right side.

A Testimony of Healing

Fast forward to today: the laceration above my eye has healed, the stitches have fallen out, and all the other wounds have closed. The swelling around my eye is minimal, and my healing has advanced immensely.

Psalm 100:5 proclaims, “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” And as Psalm 34:8 reminds us, “O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
